DMR Architects, a leading full-service architectural firm dedicated to progressive, innovative and sustainable, high-quality design, recently completed architectural and construction administration services at New Jersey Meadowlands Commission’s (NJMC) River Barge Park in Carlstadt, New Jersey.

River Barge Park is a park and marina located on approximately five acres on the shore of the Hackensack River. DMR Architects completed architectural and construction administration services for the site’s three buildings, the Winter Boat Storage Building, the Canoe Storage Building and the Educational Pavilion. The building designs refer to the early 20th century river barges that had been on the site.

The completion of the project at River Barge Park fulfilled a long-term goal of the Meadowlands Commission to preserve open space and provide public access to the Hackensack River for recreational and environmental education purposes. The site contains three buildings which will be utilized for the storage of the NJMC boat fleet, crew shells, canoes and kayaks, a sub-station for the NJ State Marine Police, and an open-air park educational pavilion structure. The park provides parking for cars and boat trailers, as well as racks for bicyclists, open landscaped areas for outdoor recreation and a shore side promenade for viewing of the river. River Barge Park will also be the launching site for the NJMC Eco-Tours on the Hackensack River.

In addition, River Barge Park includes a waterfront promenade, picnic areas, and educational signage about the natural and historic aspects of the park.

The park and buildings were designed to LEED® (Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Design) guidelines and green features include, salvaging wood from the river barges to construct the Educational Pavilion structure, soil and sediment erosion control, water efficient landscaping and plumbing fixtures, energy efficient HVAC systems and maximization of natural daylight.

“Our team worked hard to create a beautiful park that highlights the park’s landscape and encourages residents throughout the state to enjoy the natural beauty of the outdoors. I am proud of the work of our team and I am excited to have been a part of a project that promotes the beauty of our environment,” Lloyd A. Rosenberg, AIA, President and CEO of DMR Architects said. River Barge Park is located at 260 Outwater Lane in Carlstadt.
