The Provident Bank Foundation has once again shown its support of Liberty Science Center's "Partners in Science" program by donating $12,000 to the program.

Now in its 25th year, “Partners in Science” places a group of 25 carefully selected high school students into an intensive, eight-week summer program. Participants are paired with mentors in the fields of science, health and technology and are challenged to contribute to ongoing research and other independent projects in a professional laboratory setting.

“The Provident Bank Foundation has been a long-term supporter of Liberty Science Center and we always appreciate their support of our programs,” said Ruben Rosario, associate director of extended programs at the Liberty Science Center. “This grant will specifically go toward providing student stipends at the conclusion of the program to cover money spent on transportation, food, etc.”

“Partners in Science” takes students beyond basic textbook learning and instead provides them the hands-on opportunity to explore specific questions currently driving scientific progress.

In working closely with mentors, students gain experience working in the field, and also develop a network of advisors and lifelong connections that can help with future career endeavors and goals.

Students who are selected are expected to commit 40 hours per week to their responsibilities, and also must attend bi-monthly instructional workshops held at Liberty Science Center.

At the conclusion of the program in August, a final symposium event is held where participants have the opportunity to present all of their hard work to staff, peers, mentors, teachers and parents. Stipends are also awarded once all program requirements are completed.

“It is our pleasure to be able to support innovative programs like Liberty Science Center’s ‘Partners in Science’ program. It is wonderful to see students get ahead through this fantastic, educational program, and we are proud to help them prepare for their academic futures,” said Kendall Warsaw, executive director of The Provident Bank Foundation.

Each year, selection of 25 students for “Partners in Science” is extremely competitive. This year alone, Liberty Science Center received more than 100 applications for the program.

To be considered, a student must be a junior or senior in high school and nominated by a school, community-based organization or pre-college science and technology program. They must also exhibit outstanding abilities and/or serious interest in the sciences, a developed level of maturity, and participate in a variety of extracurricular activities.
