The Provident Bank Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to the Hudson County Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) to help the County provide jobs and job training to 10 at-risk youth this summer.

“It’s because of the great financial contributions of Foundations like the Provident Bank that the Hudson County SYEP can provide summer jobs to the young people of Hudson County,” said William A. Gaughan, chief of staff to Hudson County executive Thomas DeGise.

Implemented in 2002, the Hudson County SYEP brings government and businesses together to offer youth valuable experience in the working world. The purpose of SYEP is to function as more than just a pay day, but rather strive to teach youth discipline and instill positive, professional values that will last a lifetime. The program is funded in part by a New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development grant and also through private sector donations.

Over the course of six weeks (July 12, 2012 through August 25), hundreds of 16 to 18 year-old students are placed in a variety of entry-level governmental jobs in municipal departments including law, accounting, and parks and recreation, to name a few. Participants are granted jobs close to where they live, and work Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. While working, youth gain first-hand experience of the responsibilities that come with being employed, along with the rewards for good work, such as an increased sense of pride and purpose.

“Throughout our history, The Provident Bank Foundation has sought opportunities to make a positive impact on New Jersey’s youth,” said Kendall Warsaw, executive director of The Provident Bank Foundation. “We are proud to support this youth employment program in its mission to instill positive work ethic and values in young people in our community.”

At the end of the summer, participants will be awarded a certificate, shirt and bag for their hard work and dedication.
